Himalayan Yew

Hand-Gathered from High Coniferous Canopies (Uttarakhand & Kashmir)

Himalayan Yew (*Taxus wallichiana*), revered locally as *Thuner* and *Rakhal*, is an ancient evergreen tree inhabiting mist-laden cloud forests between 7,000 and 10,800 feet. Our gatherers practice ethical, non-destructive canopy clipping of mature needles, preserving the tree's bark and core trunk to provide a calming, resinous, antioxidant-packed herbal infusion.

Protecting Ancient Mother Trees

*Taxus wallichiana* trees grow exceptionally slowly, often living for more than 1,000 years in remote temperate Himalayan valleys. Commercial exploitation often strips bark, killing the tree. At Himalayan Foragers, we operate under strict botanical conservation charters:

We harvest only outer mature needle tips (foliage) using hand shears, taking no more than 15% of any branch system during late autumn when volatile oils reach peak concentration. The bark and trunk remain 100% untouched, ensuring that each ancient tree continues its century-long life cycle.

Resinous Mountain Tea Ceremony

Traditional Himalayan mountain communities brew dried Yew needles to create a soothing, grounding infusion with notes of alpine cedar, pine smoke, and subtle sweetness:

1. Measuring: Place 1.5 grams (approximately 1 teaspoon) of shade-dried Yew needles into a ceramic or glass teapot.

2. Steeping: Pour 250ml of spring water heated to 90°C over the needles. Allow to infuse covered for 7 to 8 minutes.

3. Tasting Notes: The liquor pours a deep golden honey hue, delivering a comforting pine-woodsy aroma and smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Delicious plain or sweetened with a touch of raw mountain forest honey.

Bioflavonoids & Cellular Defense

Phytochemical analysis of Himalayan Yew foliage reveals a dense array of unique secondary metabolites that the tree synthesizes to survive freezing alpine winters:

  • Bioflavonoids & Quercetin: Potent cellular antioxidants that support cardiovascular elasticity and free radical neutralisation.
  • Diterpenoid Resins: Provides the signature woodsy aromatic profile while exerting natural soothing actions on the respiratory tract.
  • Polyphenolic Lignans: Modulates immune cellular response and promotes metabolic balance.
  • Zero Caffeine: A deeply calming, non-caffeinated botanical ideal for evening meditation and quiet reflection.
Old-Growth Sanctuaries

Cloud Forests of the Greater Himalayas

Our Yew harvests are sourced from protected old-growth stands hidden in high mountain cirques of Uttarakhand and Kashmir.

  • Glacial Humidity & Mist: High-altitude mountain clouds provide continuous gentle hydration, softening needle fibers.
  • Community Stewardship: Foraging permits are managed by local indigenous village councils with seasonal quotas.
  • Airtight Curing: Cured on elevated wood drying screens to maintain pure green color and vital oils without mold or moisture.
